Stranded Assets: Redux Jenna Packer
Tūhara/explore
Students will look at the way Packer uses watercolour and stencils to tell stories about our past, present, and imagined futures. Students will be encouraged to imagine the stories that might be illustrated by her vignettes of precarious settlements, decaying SUVs, or abandoned oil rigs.
Ako | Learn
Students can use this work to learn about how Packer used the diverse histories of traditional European design and contemporary street and graffiti to create repeated patterns. Through handling a range of objects from our collection, we can discuss changes to technology over time, colonisation, and climate change, and how these themes are conveyed in Packer’s work.

Years 0-6
Student can experiment with watercolour paints and stencils to create patterns that tell stories about them and their present or future worlds.
Years 7-13
Older students can analyse how repetition affects a composition over a large area, and how this supports Packer’s messages and themes. Rangatahi will use techniques of repetition and pattern-making to convey issues that they feel passionately about, exploring the juxtaposition of delicate watercolour techniques with strong political opinions.
